Tuauru Valley: Easy level, geographical location PK15 Mahina – Activity time 2h30 there and 2h back. Centers of interest: Family, Magnificent basalt organs, large and deep valley
This Mahina Valley is for its Basalt Wall described by different explorers of the world and having been reproduced by several painters. We arrive there after 2 hours of walking on a well-marked path by hikers, hunters of the valley and wild pigs! We cross the river several times and enjoy various basins to cool off! Then the highlight of the hike, the famous stone wall: The basalt organs. About 40m high and 80m long, with a trickle of water running through it. It is a basalt prism or basalt column created when the lava cooled.
Lavatubes: "It is the only hiking trail with caving on the island of Tahiti that is the most requested for its originality"
- Geographical location: Pk 39.9, in HITIA'A + 4x4 track up to 630 meters above sea level
- Level: *** 3 stars. Difficult
- Activity time (walking + breaks): morning 2h30 - afternoon 2h30
- Full day (be careful not to have planned anything in the evening such as taking a plane or booking dinner somewhere because there can be all sorts of unforeseen events).
- Travel time (from Papeete): about 1 hour drive + 45 minutes of 4x4 track
- Areas of interest: 120m, 140m and 1km caves, Fun and aquatic games, Jump in the dark (optional)
" Undoubtedly the most famous and original outing in Tahiti with long passages in the volcanic bowels of the island. The climb is first done in 4x4 on a private domain about 40 minutes of climb.
A short approach walk of 20 minutes on a passable track allows us to warm up before entering the first lava tube.
Afterwards, we progress in the river - with a possible swimming stop - before the entrance to the second lava tube, in the middle of a gushing waterfall.
We will eat at the entrance to the 3rd lava tube then we will enter and explore it for about 1h30 in a total darkness hence the headlamp.
Optional jumps are possible in the dark, we will make swimming stops, the landscapes are very varied and original: this outing is really one of the “musts” to do in Tahiti. The return is by a passable path with a magnificent view of the peninsula. In good weather, you can even see the island of MEHETIA. "
This hike cannot be characterized by its physical level, but rather by significant technical difficulties, hence its level ***: we walk all along in the river bed and pass a dozen rope passages between 2 and 6 meters. On the other hand, it is a long day, despite the 4 short kilometers and it is most often cool/cold (it is a luxury in TAHITI).
Warning: you must not be claustrophobic or suffer from vertigo to participate serenely in this hike.
Canyoning: abseiling down a waterfall with a jump.
